Someone said Ashkanazi is a Race. So I corrected them and added some objective history.
That is like saying Irish is a race.
Irish have a race, White.
But Irish is a subset of White so is French, English, German etc (it's all of Europe minus Italy)
Irish is an ethnic group, Irish who live in Ireland are a nationality. Not Everyone in Ireland is of Irish ethnicity. Majority of ethnic Irish live in the US, Canada and UK.
Ashkanazi are
Racially: White
Geographically: Eastern Europe/Turkey
Religiously: Jewish (but not all)
And self identify: (falsely) to be ancestral Hebrews who themselves identify (falsely) to be ancient Israelites which is not possible because ancient Israelites are mythology.
Overwhelmingly most Eastern Europeans are Christian and Turks are Muslim.
You can not invert the subset of a category to be the category. All dogs are animals ≠ all animals are dogs.
Most all Irish in Ireland who have a religion are Catholic. However in the US where most Irish people actually live some are Catholic some are Protestant. In the US people just join whatever church is near where they live. Sects have almost no importance.
If you don’t know the difference between
Race
Ethnicity
Nationality
Religion
Language(s)
Then you shouldn't even be talking about it.
Race is easy.
Nationality is easy.
Language is easy.
Religion is fairly easy.
Ethnicity is the only complex one.
Ethnicity can be based on a shared history.
For example White English speaking Christians from Ireland living in the US are different ethnically from White English speaking Christians from Wales living in the US. Why because they share totally different histories with different cultural groups.
Ethnicity can be based on language. Kurds, Persians, Assyrians, Jews, are often from mixed heritages racially but can distinguish themselves by language regardless of where they are, Syria has them all for example.
Ethnicity can be by cultural group which is usually geographic too. So within the same county like America, a Southerner has both a different shared history and different cultural zone than a dirty rotten Yankee from New Jersey. But they have the same nationality same language, could have the same race and same religion. But they are not the same because Southerners are good and Yankees are intrinsically selfish evil rat bastards.
Jew is complex because they all just want to be related to people in the holocaust. Holocaustianity has taken over Jewish identity more than Judaism. This is why a Christian like Dave Smith calls himself a Jew even though he doesn’t believe in Judaism and calls his kids half Jews as if you can inherit that. No one said half a Christian or half a Buddhist. Jewishness became about who you are related to because victim-hood is social currency. And being Jewish is the most privileged class one can belong to. Why not just say my mom was X but I am Y?
It used to be very simple. A Jew was a person who believes in Judaism. Done.
I'd say anyone stupid enough to believe a rabbi. Doesn't matter what race. Many people converted to Judaism who are not from and are not related to people from the Levant. In fact that’s nearly all of them.
The only two groups who call Jews a race are Zionist and Nazis.
People will bring up phenotype and different negative features associated with Jews. That’s from inbreeding cause by a religion that only let’s them marry each other. You see the same features (goblin face) among other religious groups who inbred for the same reasons.
There are no "original Jews” as in sons of Jacob because those stories are made up. It would be like a cult in England saying they are descendants of King Arthur. You cannot descend from someone who never existed.
Their religion was formed over centuries of time in multiple regions with stories it took from Babylonian, Greek, Zoroastrian, Sumerian/Akkadian faiths and even Hinduism.
Of course the fundamentalists THINK they are a bloodline to their patriarchs. Christians accept this too. But scientifically/genetically that isn't so because none of those mythological figures were real.
The problem is, religious people don't deal with actual history or science. A Jew is a Jew if his mother is a Jew. OK great but we already have Moms of several different races who follow Judaism and they do not have a common bloodline. That doesn't bother faith. Faith means you get to make up whatever you want and decide it's true, reality be damned.
If the Irish started to say they all came from the great ginger of the mountain King O'Patrick McGuinness who spoke to God on the roof of a pub and told them go forth and River dance in all the nations and they shall be yours. It wouldn't make it so.
For we all know Irish just means angels and we've been here from the beginning.
